The Northern Trust, first leg of the FedEx playoffs, was completed yesterday at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. By all accounts, it was a great success. But the title sponsor’s CEO, Bill Fenemann, sees room for a major improvement. “We’re excited to host the tournament at Liberty National, as are our clients, employees, and Brink’s truck
drivers,” said Fenemann. “And we’re going to build on that excitement with a bold plan to make the tournament even more exciting.
“Right now, when you’re on the golf course and viewing NYC’s skyline, your attention is drawn immediately to the Statue of Liberty. In 1885, the engineering firm responsible for assembling the statue blundered by positioning Lady Liberty so that she faced Manhattan rather than Jersey City. Unfortunately, we are living with that mistake today, forcing
corporate hospitality patrons to view the Statue of Liberty’s rather enormous ass. We think that’s disrespectful and unfair to the companies who support our tournament with their corporate entertainment dollars.

“So in consultation with the PGA Tour and Liberty National’s membership, we are going to jack up the Statue of Liberty and place her on a Lazy Susan. When the tournament returns to Liberty National, the old girl in NY Harbor will be facing the golf course in all of her glory. Just for fun, we might have her hold a ‘Quiet, Please’ sign!
