For decades, PGA Tour events have provided players with courtesy vehicles from a local car dealership… usually upscale brands such as Cadillac, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz.
Last weekend’s LIV Golf tournament in Bolton, Massachusetts broke with that tradition by putting courtesy camels at the players’ disposal.
A chartered 747 — accompanied by a B-2 Stealth Bomber and an A-10 Warthog — flew the players who didn’t have their own private jets to Boston’s Logan airport. A fleet of helicopters transferred the players to a landing area 60 miles away near Bolton where the players were met by 5 dozen camels and their Desert Digest Top-50 camel herders.
The players were given a choice of riding either a Dromedary camel or a Bactrian camel. For many of these ex-PGA Tour pros, they had never seen a live camel and were perplexed as to how to choose. One player — a major winner who did not want to be identified — had a one-hour lesson with one of the camel herders.
“Yeah, I mean, we had a really good session. We just went over the fundamentals,” said the player. “You know … hump alignment, good posture in the saddle, gripping the reins without tension. It was a good lesson and it did wonders for my confidence. I discovered that in terms of my body’s unique physiology, I’m more of a 2-hump guy. But my coach warned me that as I get older, I’ll probably gravitate to 1 hump and then, eventually, no humps. Hopefully, I feel like, you know, I can keep it going and build some momentum for future LIV Golf tournaments.”
