Ben Hogan’s Masters’ Roomies

The 2018 Open Championship saw Kevin Kisner, Zach Johnson, Justin Thomas, Jason Dufner, Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker, and Rickie Fowler sharing a house together near Carnoustie, Scotland. Critics carped that in “the old days,” hardened competitors would have never been roommates during a major championship.

Disproving this notion is a handwritten note recently discovered in an Aiken, South Carolina attic. It was written by Ben Hogan and addressed to “Sam” (Snead) and “Byron” (Nelson).

The note seems to indicate that these golfers were sharing a rental house during the week of the 1952 Masters Tournament. Also found with the note was a Piggly Wiggly sales flyer that Hogan had apparently clipped and saved.

Christie’s NY has set a reserve price of $400,000 for the Hogan note which will be auctioned at a yet-to-be determined date.
