During yesterday’s telecast of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Golf Channel, before cutting to a commercial, briefly showed two otters in Carmel Bay engaged in “adult” relations.
The reaction to these creatures performing the “Maritime Mambo” was swift. Social media lit up with complaints from viewers who were offended by the overtly sexual images. Golf Channel announcer and ex-PGA Tour player Tags Yarit added fuel to the fire with his remark that “the otter bitch looks like she likes it rough.”
Golf Channel released the following statement later that evening:
“We regret if anyone in our audience was upset by the unfortunate display of this afternoon’s copulating otters … and Tags Yarit’s accompanying insensitive remarks. Even if the furry bitch did look like she wanted it, Golf Channel and NBC Sports strongly believe that our viewers prefer to see dogs running along Carmel Beach … and not oversized rats doing the nasty in the Pacific Ocean. Per company policy, Tags will be taking a two-week leave of absence to reflect upon his egregious comments. He’ll also engage in group therapy sessions with a raft of otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.”
